Cephalopods Natural History Card
Cephalopoda is a class of marine mollusks with bilateral symmetry, a large head, and arms or tentacles that evolved from the molluscan foot. Many are able to squirt ink as a defense mechanism.
Cephalopods first evolved over 48, million years ago with nautiloids. Today, 800 species in two subclasses are still in existence.
Nautiloidea, with an external shell, and Coleoidea, which does not have an external shell. Coleodea includes octopuses, squid, and cuttlefish. Cephalopoda also includes two important extinct groups, ammonites and belemnites.
